Where Is Your Faith? Trusting Jesus in the Middle of Life’s Storms

Life has a way of bringing storms we never planned for. Moments when fear rises, control slips through our fingers, and hope feels distant. In those times, many of us quietly wonder: Where is God? Does He see what I’m going through? Why does He seem silent?

This is not a new struggle. The disciples of Jesus asked these same questions while trapped in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee.

A Storm They Didn’t Choose

In Luke 8:22, Jesus told His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” They obeyed. They got into the boat because He said so.

But somewhere along the journey, a fierce windstorm arose. The waves crashed in. Water filled the boat. Scripture says they were in jeopardy — real danger, real fear, real helplessness.

And Jesus?
He was asleep.

Imagine their thoughts:

  • Why are we here?
  • Didn’t He lead us into this?
  • How can He sleep while we’re drowning?

Many of us have been there. Not on open water, but in situations that feel just as overwhelming — illness, loss, uncertainty, broken relationships, financial pressure, emotional exhaustion. Storms we didn’t plan and cannot control.

When God Seems Silent

The disciples woke Jesus with desperate words:
“Master, Master, we are perishing!”

Notice something important — they still called Him Master. Even in panic, they knew who He was. But they no longer believed He would save them.

That is often the tension in our own lives. We believe in Jesus… but in the storm, we struggle to trust Him.

We know His power — but doubt His timing.
We know His love — but question His attention.
We know His promises — but fear our circumstances more.

His silence can feel like absence.
His stillness can feel like indifference.

But silence is not abandonment.

The Storm Didn’t Change Who Jesus Was

Jesus woke, rebuked the wind and waves, and the storm stopped. Immediately. Completely.

Then He asked a question that echoes through every generation:

“Where is your faith?”

Not “Why are you afraid?”
Not “Why did the storm come?”
But “Where is your faith?”

“Where is your faith?” suggests they had faith, but it wasn’t where it needed to be — not active, not applied, not anchored.

The storm had not changed His power.
The danger had not changed His authority.
The fear had not changed His identity.

He was still Master — even while sleeping.
He was still in control — even when unseen.
He was still present — even when silent.

And He is still the same today.

Three Truths for When You’re in the Storm

1. Being in God’s will does not mean being free from storms

The disciples were in that boat because they obeyed Jesus. Difficulty is not always a sign you’ve done something wrong. Sometimes storms come precisely along the path of obedience.

2. In the storm, keep turning to Jesus

The disciples didn’t abandon Him — they ran to Him. Fear didn’t stop them from seeking Him. When life shakes you, don’t withdraw from God. Move toward Him.

3. Remember what God has already done

These disciples had seen Jesus heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. Yet they struggled to believe He could handle their storm.

How often do we do the same?
God has provided before.
He has healed before.
He has opened doors before.
He has carried you before.

If He did it before — He can do it again.

So… Where Is Your Faith?

Faith is not pretending storms don’t exist.
Faith is trusting that Jesus is greater than the storm.

Faith is believing that His presence in the boat is more powerful than the waves around it.

Maybe today you feel overwhelmed. Maybe you feel helpless. Maybe it seems like Jesus is silent, distant, or asleep.

But He is still Master.
He still sees you.
He is still in control.

And when He speaks — every storm must obey.

So the question remains:

Where is your faith?

Will it rest in the noise of the storm…
or in the One who commands the wind and the waves?
